The red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) is a federally endangered species of bird that once lived in old-growth pine forests throughout the southeastern US. Now it is restricted to large remote forest lands, usually in public ownership (National Forests, State Parks). To increase their populations and numbers, we move young birds from several large populations to sites with few birds. This involves a lot of monitoring, special techniques and tools, and dedicated wildlife biologists throughout the state. Come learn from Monica Folk, Wild Folk LLC, about the fascinating aspects of this bird’s ecology and how we have developed and use technologies to save it from extinction. Click the link to register.
